The Trump administration has rolled out the National Farm Security Action Plan, a multi-agency effort that will include a ban on the purchase of US farmland by Chinese nationals.

The new initiative encompasses the Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Homeland Security and Justice. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins viewed the Chinese ownership of US farmland as a security threat.

“Too much American land is owned by nationals of adversarial countries, and more than 265,000 acres in the United States are owned by Chinese nationals, much of which is located near critical US military bases,” said Rollins in a Monday press conference.

The New York Post conducted a review based on Rollins’ statement and found at least 19 of the bases were close enough to fall under tracking surveillance from Chinese-owned farm properties. It is unclear whether the new plan will require the sale or seizure of farmland now owned by Chinese nationals, with the plan only stating the “USDA will ensure transparency of foreign US agricultural land ownership and pursue robust and overdue updates to data collection, reporting, and analysis.”

The new plan will also seek to ensure agricultural and economic prosperity while identifying supply chain gaps and in the supply chain while promoting agriculture research and safeguarding plant and animal health.
