President Donald Trump has accused Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) of mortgage fraud when Schiff was a member of the House of Representatives.

In a posting on Truth Social, Trump stated Schiff listed a property in Maryland as his primary residence so he could achieve more favorable mortgage financing terms.

“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist,” Trump wrote. “And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud. Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA. I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook. The FRAUD began with the refinance of his Maryland property on February 6, 2009, and continued through multiple transactions until the Maryland property was correctly designated as a second home on October 13, 2020. Mortgage Fraud is very serious, and CROOKED Adam Schiff (now a Senator) needs to be brought to justice.”

The Fannie Mae website has no mention of an investigation into Schiff, nor has Federal Housing Finance Agency Director and Fannie Mae Chairman Bill Pulte commented publicly on Trump’s claims. Whether criminal charges could be brought is unclear, as a statute of limitations related to this case would have expired.

The mortgage fraud charge against Schiff first surfaced in May when the right-wing online news site USA Herald published a report that claimed the allegations against Schiff was a “developing scandal that’s sending shockwaves through Capitol Hill” – however, no major media site covered the story.

The charges against Schiff, a longtime congressional foe of Trump, mirror similar charges raised against another Trump adversary, New York Attorney General Letitia James, on a mortgage that she co-signed in Virginia that she identified as her primary residence. The charge against James was first raised by Pulte – it is uncertain if Pulte was also behind the new focus on Schiff.

As of this writing, Schiff has not publicly acknowledged Trump’s statement.
