A mega-church in central Connecticut announced plans to build a five-story apartment complex with 146 affordable units on its property.

The Hartford Courant reports First Cathedral in Bloomfield offered an informal presentation to the town’s planning and zoning commission. In addition to the new housing, the complex – which would be located behind the 53,000-square-foot church – is designed to include a new day care center.

“When we bought the property, we bought 40 acres of land,” said Pastor LeRoy Bailey III, whose church acquired the land in the 1990s. “We wanted to build a future and develop it.”

The church will need to make a formal application for a zoning amendment and gain a site plan approval before it can begin construction on the project.
