The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly issued a request for proposals (RFP) for the design of a new stadium located across the Mississippi River from their Missouri home.
KCUR reports the team is considering land adjacent to the Kansas Speedway for a new stadium and entertainment district. While the team has not declared their intention to move out of Missouri’s Kansas City for the same-named city in Kansas, it is reportedly negotiating with the State of Kansas and NASCAR to acquire land near the Kansas Speedway.
The State of Kansas has offered to finance up to 70% of a new stadium project if the team decides to cross the state line, with a minimum $1 billion price tag, by issuing bonds to be repaid with sales tax collected in the STAR Bond district. Neither the team nor Kansas officials confirmed the report.
“Kansas Department of Commerce continues to conduct a careful analysis of costs and benefits as part of crafting agreements to keep the Chiefs and Royals in the region while maximizing growth opportunities for Kansas,” said Patrick Lowry, a spokesman for the department.
