Demolition has begun on Aloha Stadium, Hawaii’s largest sports venue.
The suburban Honolulu-based stadium opened in 1975 but has been unused since 2020. Hawaii News Now reports work has begun to cut utilities and remove hazardous materials from the site, with state crews scheduled to remove furnishings. The full dismantling of the stadium is expected to take approximately 10 months.
Michael Yadao has been named as deputy stadium manager, tasked with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the stadium’s dismantling and the transition to a new stadium. Yadao has been on the Stadium Authority Board since 2021 and was previously executive director of Hawaii Masons’ and Plasters’ Unions.
“With my background in Hawaii’s construction industry and working closely with our local labor community, I’m committed to helping move this project forward with purpose and collaboration,” he said.
The old stadium is being replaced by a 22,500-seat venue that will become home for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors football program, with a completion date set for March 2029.
