The home of an Indianapolis lawmaker who voted in favor of a data center development was riddled with bullets on Monday morning while a note was left under his doormat that read “No Data Centers.”
WXIN reports City-County Councilor Ron Gibson’s home was the target of gunfire on Monday at about 12:45 am. Gibson, who was home with his 8-year-old son, said 13 rounds were fired into his home. No one was injured and police describe the attack as an “isolated, targeted incident.”
Gibson voted in favor of constructing a $500 million data center in Indianapolis’ Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. The project has generated controversy within the city, with many residents lobbying to prevent the development from going forward, and Gibson received angry comments online for his support of the project.
“Just steps from where those bullets struck is our dining room table, where my son had been playing with his Legos the day before,” Gibson said. “That reality is deeply unsettling. This was not just an attack on my home but endangered my child and disrupted the safety of our entire neighborhood.”
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett condemned the attack, issuing a statement that said, “No family in Indianapolis should have to experience this type of violence in a place where they should feel safe and secure: their home.”
