Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas is proposing a $1.9 billion project that would build a new stadium for the Kansas City Royals in the heart of the downtown area.

KCTV reports the new stadium would be based at Washington Square Park, one of the few green spaces in the city’s downtown. The mayor proposed an ordinance allowing the city to commit up to $600 million through bonds to finance the development. The bonds would be paid with tax revenue generated by the stadium and the surrounding development district, and residents would not be forced to pay new taxes on the endeavor.

Additional funding would come from the county and state governments and the Royals, although Quinton did not offer a final budget on the percentage each entity would contribute. Also absent from the proposal are parking details, which would be determined through later consultations with local businesses.

In a statement, the team said it looked forward to having “more detailed conversations as we consider solutions that are best for our team, our fans, and our community.” The Royals’ current lease at the Truman Sports Complex runs through 2031.
