President Trump has named Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), to replace Tulsi Gabbard as acting director of national intelligence.

Last month Gabbard announced she was stepping down from her job on June 30 to care for her husband, who is fighting bone cancer. Although Pulte has no experience in dealing with national intelligence issues, Trump used a Truth Social post to insist he is the right man for the job.

“William has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago,” Trump posted.

The president added that Pulte will continue to work as FHFA director and as chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Trump previously announced that Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence Aaron Lukas would take on Gabbard’s position in an acting status, and it is unclear how or why Pulte was assigned.
