A Texas real estate agent was arrested for stabbing a woman to death in her apartment over 14 years ago.
The New York Post reports Mayra Velasquez was apprehended for the killing of Irasema Chavez, who was found in her Arlington, Texas, apartment on Jan. 20, 2012, with nearly 100 stab wounds. The initial investigation found no signs of forced entry into Chavez’s apartment, and the only evidence at the time was surveillance video footage of a person in baggy clothing and a hoodie climbing the stairs and knocking on the door of Chavez’s residence before being allowed inside.
Over the years, the case went cold when DNA evidence failed to match potential suspects in police databases. The case was reanimated in 2024 when Arlington police and the FBI Dallas Field Office used the agency’s advanced Investigative Genetic Genealogy program to combine the crime scene evidence with public genealogy databases and family tree research.
Investigators did not reveal the information that linked Velasquez to the crime, except to say there was enough data to issue an arrest warrant. Also unclear is whether Velasquez and Chavez knew each other.
Velasquez’s social media pages identify her formerly working with Pure Realtors LLC and holding an active real estate license. She is currently employed as an affiliate manager for JC Limo.
Velasquez is being held on no bond, and her next court date has not been scheduled.
