The Chicago Bears have begun geotechnical testing of the soil at the Wolf Lake Terminals site in Hammond, Indiana, as part of viability study for their planned new stadium.
On Tap Sports reports drilling equipment was seen at the location over the weekend at the site west of Interstate 90. This test elevates the team’s pursuit of a new stadium into serious due diligence evaluation of the site, an industrial location based near existing factories.
If the ongoing tests are favorable, the Bears could move begin full-scale environmental reviews and negotiations with local and state officials in Indiana.
The Bears are focusing on moving to Hammond after Illinois lawmakers failed to pass stadium-related legislation during their spring legislative session; Hammond is roughly a half-hour’s drive from downtown Chicago. However, the team has yet to make a formal decision on their future plans.
