The Florida Sheriffs Association has become the latest first responder organization to publicly oppose Amendment 3, a property tax measure that will appear on November’s election ballot.
Amendment 3 would increase homestead exemptions for state residents who own primary residences by the end of this year to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028, with further increases tied to the Consumer Price Index. The amendment caps assessment increases on other property to 5% a year.
In a statement on its Facebook page, the organization warned the measure would create a negative impact on communities that rely on property tax revenue to finance public services.
“The Florida Sheriffs Association is significantly concerned with Constitutional Amendment 3, which allows Tallahassee to control your local budgets, creates longer law enforcement response times, limits communities’ ability to provide road repairs and stormwater removal – these are a few of the things voters deserve to be aware of.”
The sheriffs join Florida’s Fraternal Order of Police and the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association in their opposition to Amendment 3, which can be passed into law with the approval of 60% of the state’s voters.
