A longtime staple of Los Angeles’ Latin music scene could soon be demolished and replaced by an affordable housing project.
The Eastsider LA reports a demolition permit has been completed to remove Club Bahia, a nightclub that has been part of the Echo Park neighborhood since 1974. The venue would be replaced with a 100% affordable housing complex that would encompass 187 units for low-income tenants, 48 for moderate-income residents, and two manager units.
The club property, which last changed hands in 2022, is owned by the same entity that owns adjacent lots where other multifamily housing complexes are being created.
“All I can tell you is I wish that wasn’t going on,” said Club Bahia owner Michael Higgins, whose grandparents created the venue. “I’m hoping to open up a new location. But they also told me it’s going to be a while before anything happens.”
Higgins added the club will be open on Fridays and Saturdays for the foreseeable future.
