US Attorney General Pam Bondi is refuting media reports that the Department of Justice (DOJ) opened an investigation into Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA).
On Nov. 20, ABC News reported the DOJ and the FBI opened a probe into Pulte for potential misconduct in the criminal investigations of President Trump’s political enemies. The report, which cited input from unnamed “sources familiar with the matter,” said the probe was seeking to determine if Pulte and US Pardon Attorney Ed Martin inappropriately enlisted individuals from outside the DOJ to investigate allegations of mortgage fraud amid ongoing investigations into New York Attorney Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff of California.
Pulte issued criminal referrals against James and Schiff over alleged mortgage fraud. He also issued similar referrals against Federal Reserve Gov. Lisa Cook and Rep. Eric Swalwell of California. Watchdogs within Fannie Mae who raised concerns over Pulte’s demands for the mortgage records used in the referrals were fired.
Today, Bondi took to X to declare, “Fake news. There is no investigation into Bill Pulte.” However, it is unclear why Bondi waited three weeks to make this announcement. Pulte, who retweeted the message on his personal X account, is also under investigation by the congressionally-backed Government Accountability Office.
