In steps the government. Once reached the point where you are paying taxes instead of taking money out, the government decides to hit you twice, the second shot blindsides a lot of people – it’s your health insurance. 3 things commonly occur when you make that jump in a tax bracket. 1) your premiums go up, WAY UP. 2) Your benefits get worse, a lot worse. 3) You get a letter from the IRS saying that you owe them for all the tax credits they paid towards your health insurance for the last year or more.
This is the dilemma, does being financially successful mean that your family is stuck with poor coverage? If you stay with the ACA (Obamacare) options, the answer is yes, you will have to pay excessive amounts of money for what amounts to catastrophic coverage. There is another option – private health insurance.
These are plans that are not available online. The plans serve a specific group of people earn too much money to qualify for government assistance. They have a specific set of benefits that cover your day to day health needs and often have the ability to cover major life events for a smaller out of pocket that the ACA plans. They can also have significantly lower premiums.
Sounds great – what’s the catch? Not everybody qualifies for private health insurance. The insurance companies that specialize in this type of coverage only accept a lower risk pool. That means people with certain health conditions will not qualify. They provide a great option for many, but not all, high income households.
