President Joe Biden announced that he is discontinuing his re-election campaign and offered his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

The 81-year-old Biden added that he would remain as president for the remainder of his term, which expires in January. Biden has been in seclusion at his beach home in Rehoboth, Delaware, after contracting Covid-19 last week. His announcement was made on social media, and it is unclear when or if Biden will make a public appearance to explain his decision.

Biden has come under intense pressure from Democratic Party elected officials, left-leaning media and prominent donors to withdraw from the nomination after his disastrous performance at last month’s debate against former President Donald Trump. Polling from multiple sources affirmed that Biden’s chances for re-election were evaporating after the debate.

But despite Biden’s endorsement, Harris is not guaranteed to become his replacement as the Democratic nominee for president. The Democratic National Convention begins on Aug. 19 in Chicago, and it is uncertain whether the party’s leaders will embrace Harris’ candidacy or seek another process to nominate another person.

For the real estate industry, Biden’s exit leaves unanswered questions on whether Harris would continue Biden’s advocacy for new tax credits for first-time homebuyers and rent caps for certain rental housing properties. While the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development repeatedly refers to the “Biden-Harris Administration” in its press statements, Harris has rarely made any speeches or public comments related to housing.
