Construction costs on the new Las Vegas baseball stadium for the former Oakland A’s have ballooned to $2 billion.

The Nevada Independent reports the 33,000-capacity stadium was initially budgeted at $1.5 billion, only to be raised last year to $1.75 billion. Team owner John Fisher has acknowledged the budget has since moved “up in the $2 billion range,” while team president Marc Badain said a guaranteed maximum price will be provided “shortly.”

Currently, 50% of the stadium’s concrete foundation has been completed, while Badain insisted construction is on schedule for a 2028 season opening. The team is currently playing in West Sacramento, California, after their lease to the Oakland Coliseum expired last year.

The new stadium will receive $350 million in public financing, with the team absorbing the remaining costs on the project. Team owner Fisher did not express concern over the rising costs on the project.

“The costs have gone up as more detail comes in. That’s fine,” Fisher said. “From the very beginning, we wanted a design that was unique. Vegas is one of the most unique towns in the world. We wanted a building that would symbolize the excitement and uniqueness that is the market.”
