The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is relocating its headquarters to the historic Government Accountability Office (GAO) Building in Washington, DC, with the transition expected to be completed in early October 2026.
The CPSC has been headquartered at the privately-owned Bethesda Towers in Maryland since the early 1990s. In a statement, the agency said its relocation to a federally owned property “supports the Trump Administration’s broader effort to reduce reliance on leased office space, improve utilization of federally owned facilities, and modernize government operations.”
The agency’s National Product Testing and Evaluation Center in Rockville, Maryland, will continue to operate at its current facility. The agency added that the relocation will reduce its physical footprint by approximately 30%.
“This relocation sets CPSC up for long-term success while demonstrating our responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars,” said Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman. “By transitioning from privately leased office space to an existing government-owned facility, we’re reducing costs, making better use of federal assets, and creating a modern headquarters that better supports our critical safety mission.”
