The Detroit City FC unveiled new renderings and the new name for its proposed 15,000-seat soccer stadium, although the team has yet to secure the tax abatements needed to finance the $150 million venue’s construction.
The Detroit Free Press reports the stadium will be called AlumniFi Field, named for a brand created by the MSU Federal Credit Union. The financial aspects of the naming rights were not disclosed.
The stadium project, which is include 70 units of affordable housing and 15,000 square feet of retail space, will be constructed on the site of the long-defunct Southwest Detroit Hospital, which was closed in 1999. Demolition on the vacant hospital is scheduled for the fall and construction on the new stadium is slated for completion in early 2027.
Detroit City FC co-founder Sean Mann cautioned that construction is dependent on approval by Detroit’s City Council of commercial tax abatements to support the project. However, Mann admitted he was not certain about the total monetary value of the abatements. The stadium will not be financed with taxpayer funds, although the City Council agreed to reimburse the team up to $5.9 million in exchange for demolishing Southwest Detroit Hospital and mitigating the environmental hazards at the site.
The new stadium will replace Keyworth Stadium, the 7,000-seat venue in the Detroit enclave of Hamtramck where the team has been based since 2016.
