The US broke a record for electricity net generation in 2025, according to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Last year, the nation generated 4.43 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity, up 2.8% from the 2024 generation level that was previously the highest annual level, based on statistics dating back to 1949.

“Much of the recent growth in electricity demand comes from the commercial sector, which includes data centers, and the industrial sector, which includes manufacturing establishments,” said the EIA in a statement. “In 2025, US retail sales of electricity to ultimate customers, which is a key indicator of demand, increased compared with 2024 in all three sectors: residential (by 2.2%), commercial (by 2.9%), and industrial (by 0.7%).”

The EIA added that growing demand will result in increased electricity generation throughout 2026 and into 2027.
