Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is acknowledging that his state’s property taxes are too high, but he insists he has no control over the situation.

Capital City Now reports Pritzker absolved himself and the state legislature of being responsible for property tax hikes, insisting that was an issued decided at a local government level.

“Property taxes are not determined by the State of Illinois; rather, by local governments, indeed local units of government, including school boards, park boards, library boards, municipalities, etc.,” said Pritzker. “I think people sometimes get confused. I know the Republican Party in Illinois is quite confused and thinks that this is a state issue, when it is actually a local issue.”

Pritzker added the state was trying to alleviate the tax burden by providing more money for education.

“We’ve now gone from about 24%, to approaching 40% of school funding coming from the state,” said Pritzker. “One of the purposes of that is to alleviate the burden on local governments, on local school boards, and on people who are paying property taxes locally.”

But Pritzker added local school districts “didn’t take the hint” and declined to offer any property tax relief for state residents.

  4. Funny how not a single comment from the conservative peanut gallery actually rebuts Pritzker’s assertions, but rather just resorts to personal ad hominem attacks… Could it be that they know he’s right?

  5. Pritzker is right that local and county boards set the majority of the tax base, but that is not the whole picture. Funny how the governor of Texas has listened to his constituents and found a way to lower property taxes state-wide. I have never seen the Illinois governor take responsibility for any of the immense problems facing his state. A typical self-serving politician!
