The Financial Crimes Unit of Texas’ Midland Police Department made its first arrest after investigating a series of fraudulent real estate sales.

The suspect, 50-year-old Courtney Lister, was arrested on April 13. At the time of his apprehension, he possessed and intended to pass forged documents.

Lister is accused of participating in a scheme where Midland properties were advertised online as investment opportunities. The suspects used fraudulent documents to sell properties they did not own, and accepted cash payment for forged documents such as property deeds. The suspects met victims at local businesses instead of title companies and their documents were notarized not in the presence of signatories.

Lister, who was identified to police by one of the victims of the fraud scheme, was arrested for Tampering with Government Record, Forgery, Theft, and Real Property Theft. Two additional suspects were identified and arrest warrants were obtained for them on similar charges.

Lister is currently being held on a combined $230,000 bond.
