The residence that was the first commission for Frank Lloyd Wright as an independent architect has been listed for $1.985 million.
Mansion Global reported The Winslow House, which the 26-year-old Wright designed in the Chicago suburb of River Forest, Illinois, was built in 1894-1895. The structure anticipated Wright’s Prairie School designs with its horizontal design, low-pitched roof, open floor plans and interior woodwork.
The property includes a 5,000-square-foot main house and a coach house with two bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms, an updated full kitchen and a three-car garage. In the main house, there are five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and one half-bath.
The property, which last changed hands in 2016 for $1.375 million, contains most of Wright’s original works including stained-glass windows and the original wood floors (which the previous owners kept covered in wall-to-wall carpeting). The original three fireplaces have been brought up to working standards after being unusable for years – at a cost of $1 million.
Modern upgrades to the home include air conditioning in the main house, a whole-house generator, and the remodeling of two full bathrooms.
Wright designed the house for William Winslow, a manufacturer of decorative ironwork, and many of the home’s original brass sconces were retrofitted to contemporary standards.
The Winslow House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
