Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner called on Senate Democrats to put “principle over politics” and vote to reopen the federal government.
In a posting on X, Turner wrote, “Our colleagues on the Left have forgotten why they were sent to Washington, DC. Whether we are elected or appointed, we are called to serve the American people. Stop the political games, restore common sense, and open our government.”
Turner also included a video in his X posting where he declared, “We have to put principle over politics. And right now, the Left is using politics and disregarding principle. That principle is we’ve all been called to serve the American people for such a time as this. And politics have no place here. Compassionate common sense needs to come in place.”
Turner added the American people were “depending on us,” urging Democrats to “move politics to the side and focus on the principle.”

Turner is exactly right. How exactly does shutting down the government serve the people? This is just another example of the extremist political shenanigans that are destroying our country. I bet if those losers in Congress weren’t getting paid during the shutdown there wouldn’t be a shutdown.
100000%! Congress should not take a pay check when the government is shut down and frankly should not even be allowed to run for re-election if the budget is not balanced.
I agree Ken. Our Military and Air Traffic Controllers and other government employee that keep the country going deserve every check that Congress has cashed. They always suffer while Congress cashes checks.
I think there needs to be a new law in place stating that if the government gets shut down no one in government gets paid until they reopen like the rest of the people not getting paid. I believe this would speed things up considerably
That’s assuming the demo’s have any other principal other than to bleed the working man to line their own pockets and become millionaires.
How about the republicans quit hiding at home come back to DC and negotiate. Oh but you probably would rather blame dems
you’re a do, do rep are to negotiate buy dem want to feed the illegals, send them back to their country. Better yet, you feed them and pay their bills.
Just because one makes a statement, doesn’t make said statement true. Don’t the Republicans hold the White House, House and Senate? So who’s in control here? Democrats??? Nope! Open your eyes people!
I don’t know ask your Republican congressmen who won’t even open up the House or seat a duly elected representative who will sign a Republican bill to get Epstein files to find out what DJT was really into. They won’t negotiate on anything so it is both sides. People’s health premiums doubling is no joke and that is exactly what Republicans will do. Oh yeah “trust us” we will negotiate that after you open the government. They can’t be trusted farther than you can throw them. Mid terms are coming and the fools will be kicked out of office and we can start rebuilding our democracy and taking care of our citizens who need it most not the top 1% of billionaires. Hope Mike Johnson is the first to go. Even Marjorie Taylor Greene is truning on her party.
This has nothing to do with Jeffery Epstein, the two subjects have absolutely nothing in common. Doctor Jill served as our President four years and would have released the Epstein Files if there was anything damaging to Donald Trump or the Republican Party during Her term in office.
Shutting down the Government was a decision democrats made to inflict as much pain on the taxpayers as they could in order to get an ADDITIONAL one and a half trillion dollars to spread around to their political doners.
Do you folks, so caught up w/Epstein files, not realize that Epstein was represented by Alan Dershowitz, the attorney, and any handling or distribution of the so called Epstein papers will have to be cleared by Counsel? If Epstein was as crafty as supposed, there was very little, if anything, in writing.
Not the 1%, but the healthcare companies are the ones reporting skyrocketing profits because the democrat are subsidizing our tax dollars into that industry. If the democrats want to help people with the burden of healthcare, they need to push the healthcare industry to reduce their premiums and health care costs.
The Republicans do not represent the ordinary people and are holding us hostage by their fealty to the president who cares only about himself. He eventually betrays everyone and is unfit for the most powerful job in the world. People need to eat and need health care, something that the wealthy do not understand. It is the Republicans who use cruelty to get their way. Lawlessness and cruelty will be rejected by the majority.
Anna, Ut oh. Are we a little TDS? Usually Congress draws the ire of the public for these antics. You do have a point. Democrats historically have crowed about how many are getting help. 42 million on food stamps, while the Republicans like to talk about how many no longer need it. More jobs. Thus all the several $Trillion investment the President brags about. I think your concern for the ordinary vs the care about himself perception of politics is oversimplified.
Ken and Mr. Turner are right on target. those fomenting the shutdown (despite Deb’s misinformed comments). If Congress weren’t getting paid and their “pet projects” (cash cows) didn’t receive funds (most continue) we would see the government funding magically restored to operation.
I have, after determining those who voted Nay, voted today and I voted against the obstructionists who refuse to fund the Government.
Well Reg, either you’re a one percenter or an idiot. Maybe both.
Ken & Reg hit the nail on the head. The extremist cry baby debt & excessive spending Democrats need to admit that they are in the wrong and vote to open our government. Why are there so many people in our society that don’t realize that a 38 trillion dollar debt is insanity? We have to cut spending. DOGE shined a light on just some of it. Thank you Mr. Musk for your efforts and results in exposing some of the federal governments misuse and abuse of out tax dollars. SNAP has nearly a 15% or maybe more fraud and abuse rate in these food stamps. Regardless, on this issue of the government shut down I hope that some people will have an epiphany and realize that the Republicans are on the right track and not the Democrats.
And of course a massive increase in debt from recent large tax cuts for wealthy that alone add 1 trillion a year to debt and tax on public via tariffs to help pay for it is okay right? want to reduce deficit start by emilnating new tax cuts for wealthy not cutibg benefit for working class.
Common refrain, fellow realtor. I don’t think it plays out that way historically. It’s not a zero-sum-gain economy. When something is subsidized, more of it is made. The idea is to lower the tax (cost) of something, to lure the businessman/woman out into the market to spend/invest. Much like a store puts merchandise on sale to lure customers in. While there (I have personal experience) they wind up spending more. In this case money is subsidized, and more revenue comes in. – – – – But the debt goes up, you say, yes, the politician’s desire to spend remains.
The subject is Opening the government, and resume serving the people.
All the other Epstein etc. political crap has nothing to do with Opening the Government.
The way I see it, Republicans YES, Democrats NO. So, who is kidding who?
Bottom line, the Democrats and likeminded people refusing to open the govt. are not representing the ordinary people, who are suffering the most. People with a few bucks can handle it, it’s the ordinary people the Democrats are hurting so, whose kidding who.
The American people shouldn’t have to choose between having basic health care or feeding their families while Billionaires are getting huge tax breaks and trying to decide which gold toilet they want to buy next.
The Republicans have the Senate, the House, the Supreme Court, and the White House, but this is the Democrats fault? Bwahahah. Not even close. I tell you what “political gamesmanship” is at play here: an agency head forcing his employees to put a “Democrat shutdown” message on its website and making partisan calls like these. Run HUD, dude. Do your job.
Why does Congress still get paid during a government shut-down??? Since they can’t get their job done right, they don’t deserve a paycheck!!! If our armed forces and other government workers have to work without pay, so should Congress!!! We elected them to serve the country, not themselves!!!
Stop making sense, Lisa. But really, it’s because they’ve deemed themselves essential.
Just as a reminder to our Republican cohorts… and I say cohorts because I assume we are all Realtors… if the Democrats capitulate on this issue, over 44 million Americans will lose their health care… that is staggering. I’m not happy that the shut down is adversely impacting so much of our daily lives… including ours and those of our clients… but… at some point in time, we all have to stand up for something larger than ourselves. The Republicans in Congress are also getting paid while federal government employees… what few are still there… are not being paid… BUT, we cannot let the president and his Great Gatsby friends take away health care or SNAP benefits from millions of Americans just so they can all further line their own pockets. And please understand, these are not illegal immigrants or slackards that are mooching off of the government and our taxpayer money. These are hardworking people, many of whom work two or more jobs just to make ends meet. As a taxpayer, I am happy to have my taxes contribute to their health care and SNAP benefits… whatever it takes for ALL of us to be able to live the American dream. It is not about giving a handout… it is about giving people a hand up… and the OPPORTUNITY to not just succeed but to get ahead. People can’t do that if they can’t afford to feed their families or pay for basic healthcare. And if you think that does not affect us in our jobs and our clients in the purchase and sale of their homes, then you are being very shortsighted. A high tide lifts all boats. Stop being selfish and understand that holding out for affordable health care, etc. for low income people actually helps us all.
The shutdown is hurting RE, but what else is new lately. Usually Congress draws the ire of the public for these antics, but Democrats are at such a low ebb nationally it’s apparently worth it to them. I am a little surprised no one’s trying to make a few proposals. Even as a trial balloon.
