Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said a property tax freeze for seniors was “one of the things” under consideration for reducing the state’s tax burden.

Iowa Capital Dispatch reports Reynolds stated she received feedback from older residents that they were “having a hard time” covering expenses due to rising property taxes and increases to health care premiums.

“We have to see what the numbers look like,” said Reynolds when asked if a property tax freeze for seniors was feasible. “We can’t shift it to the state, that’s not property tax relief … it has to be sustainable. We have to think differently about how we’re delivering services to Iowans and there’s a lot of opportunity out there to do that.”

Reynolds, who is entering her final year as governor, stated that property tax relief will be her focus for the 2026 legislative session.

“I’ve done a lot of hard things, but there’s a reason that it’s last,” Reynolds added. “There’s a reason that it hasn’t been done.”
