Beginning on Jan. 1, home sellers in Iowa will need to disclose the presence of lead water lines in their property.
KTIV reports the recently passed state law House File 876 goes into effect on New Year’s Day. This comes ahead of the 2037 deadline set in the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule requiring the replacement of lead service pipes in residences.
Chris Delfs, board president of the Northwest Iowa Board of Realtors, welcomed the new state law, which also covers includes the lines that connect the city’s water main to either the interior plumbing in a structure or to the water meter.
“Ultimately, having the knowledge is beneficial to the buyers,” said Delfs. “Because then they can determine how they want to proceed with that, just like if there was an issue with the roof or something else with the house, repairs can be negotiated as a part of the deal.”
Delfs added that a seller could face penalties if the lead service lines are not disclosed during a home sale.
