A village on the Italian island of Sardinia is seeking to lure Americans unhappy with this month’s election results by offering homes prices as low as $1.
CNN reports the village Ollolai (population 1,300) has created a website for potential expatriates who are exhausted by politics and are seeking “to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities.” Mayor Francesco Columbu said that while inquiries from other nationals were welcome, he believed Americans were the best newcomers to reanimate his sleepy rural community.
“We just really want, and will focus on, Americans above all,” said Columbu. “We can’t of course ban people from other countries to apply, but Americans will have a fast-track procedure. We are betting on them to help us revive the village, they are our winning card.”
Columbu stated the village has three tiers of accommodation to choose from: Free temporary homes to qualified digital nomads, homes in need of renovations that are priced at roughly $1, and ready-to-occupy houses for prices up to $105,000. He added a special team of advisors are ready to work with interested buyers, ready to arrange everything from property tours to finding contractors and builders to dealing with the paperwork needed by foreign real estate buyers.
Columbu stressed that he did not want to go on the record as bashing President-elect Donald Trump, stressing that “we can’t specifically mention the name of one US president who just got elected, but we all know that he’s the one from whom many Americans want to get away from now and leave the country.”
