The village government in Long Island that was the home of accused serial killer Rex Heuermann is seeking to purchase the property.

The New York Post reported the modest six-room single-family home in Massapequa Park was acquired in 1994 for $170,000 by Heuermann, an architect who was arrested earlier this month and charged with murders of three women whose bodies were found on Gilgo Beach in 2010; Heuermann is a prime suspect in the murder of a fourth woman from the same time.

Village Mayor Daniel Pearl told a community meeting on Monday night that his government was exploring the potential purchase of the property, which Zillow has estimated as being worth $635,000.

“Legally, we’re getting everything lined up so the village is prepared to move forward when the time comes,” he said.

Since the arrest and the massive media coverage that came with it, the village has been overrun with curiosity seekers crowding around the property. The local police have begun ticketing drivers who slow down to stare at the home, which was extensively searched by law enforcement officials and has since been returned to Heuermann’s wife.
