A 140-acre golf course in Massachusetts has been sold for $24.8 million to a solar energy developer who plans to install 30 megawatts of photovoltaic systems at the site.

The Worcester Business Journal reports the Maplegate Country Club, located in Franklin and Bellingham, was acquired by an entity managed by San Francisco-based NextGrid, which will install two 15-megawatt solar systems designed to provide energy for approximately 6,000 households.

The golf course, which hosted US Open Qualifying events in 1998 and 2001, was enrolled under Chapter 61B, a Massachusetts law providing tax incentives for recreational land uses. With this sale, the property will now generate $280,000 annually in additional tax revenue.

Joseph Evans and Dusty Burke Jr. of American Commercial Real Estate brokered the sale. Evans noted, “This project represents a major investment in renewable energy across Massachusetts and reflects the growing role of private capital in supporting sustainable infrastructure. The transaction required careful navigation of permitting processes across Franklin and Bellingham and extensive coordination with municipal boards and stakeholders throughout the region.”
