The Mississippi Museum of Art has acquired a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed property in the state capital of Jackson.
WLOX reports the Usonian-style residence and its furnishings were designed by Wright in 1948 and was completed in 1954 as the home of for oil industry executive J. Willis Hughes. The property fell into disrepair due to structural problems and was acquired by the late architect Robert Parker Adams in 1980, who restored the residence. It was listed for sale in June for $2.5 million; the sale price was not disclosed.
The property, which is dubbed “Fountainhead,” was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1980. The museum plans to make the site open to the public.
“Like Eudora Welty’s House and Garden and the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home, Fountainhead will become a must-see destination and unique experience for residents of and visitors to Jackson,” said Lisa Percy, chairwoman of the museum’s board of trustees.
