Canada’s federal government, in partnership with the provincial government of Alberta, Calgary’s city government, and Liberty Housing Organization, is providing approximately $24 million in combined funding to build a 57-unit multifamily complex in Calgary.
The new six-story property, dubbed Village Block, will include two levels of underground parking, one commercial retail unit at ground level, and a rooftop area for residents.
According to a statement issued by the federal government, “Priority rental will be given to those identified by Centre for Newcomers as in need of affordable housing. This includes but is not limited to recent immigrants, racialized groups, survivors, seniors, young adults, people with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQQI+.”
“Having a safe, stable place to call home is the foundation for everything else,” said Nathan Neudorf, Alberta’s minister of assisted living and social services and minister responsible for housing. “Projects like Village Block show what’s possible when we work together to deliver housing that meets the real needs of Albertans and creates lasting opportunity, today and into the future.”
