California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) will release $101 million to finance the rebuilding of affordable multifamily rental housing in the Greater Los Angeles Region.

According to the governor’s office, thousands of families are still displaced by January’s wildfires. The new funding will prioritize projects close to wildfire burn areas and are ready to begin construction immediately upon receiving funds. The allocation will also include a resident preference for households displaced by the Los Angeles County wildfires.

Newsom was not in California to announce the funding – he was touring South Carolina in what appeared be an early campaign stop ahead of the 2028 presidential election, where he is being touted as a candidate for the Democratic Party nomination.

“Los Angeles has taken significant steps to rebuild after January’s fires, but the devastation is significant and there remains a long road ahead,” said Newsom in a statement published on his website. “Thousands of families – from Pacific Palisades to Altadena to Malibu – are still displaced and we owe it to them to help. The funding we’re announcing today will accelerate the development of affordable multifamily rental housing so that those rebuilding their lives after this tragedy have access to a safe, affordable place to come home to.”
