North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein has signed an executive order designed to increase housing opportunities and affordability.

According to Stein’s office, North Carolina faces a gap of more than 750,000 housing units though 2029. This shortage exacerbates housing affordability problems for low- and moderate-income residents.

Executive Order No. 36 calls for interagency collaboration to address issues impacting housing supply, affordability, and access. Stein appointed Janneke Ratcliffe to the new role of senior advisor for housing policy and tasked her with coordinating statewide housing strategy, establishing measurable goals, and communicating North Carolina’s housing policy. Ratcliffe was previously vice president of the housing and communities division at the Urban Institute in Washington, DC.

“Too many families are struggling to make rent or afford a home,” said Stein. “This executive order directs a whole-of-government approach to get more homes of all types built and make homeownership more accessible and affordable for North Carolinians.”
