New York City is taking at trashy approach to its housing shortage – an old garage for garbage trucks is being converted into a 232-unit development.
According to The Gothamist, the 115,000-square-foot garage on Staten Island will become an affordable housing complex called Hillside Grove that will consist of three residential buildings. The development will set aside 90 apartments for seniors earning under $65,000 a year, with 37 units set aside as co-ops for purchase by moderate-income residents and 105 units priced for households of three earning under $112,000 a year.
The city selected the affordable housing groups Spatial Equity Co., Nehemiah HDFC and Volunteers of America-Greater New York to redevelop the site.
The project is the latest effort to convert city-owned properties into affordable housing. As for the garbage trucks that are currently housed at the site, they will be relocated to a new garage on Staten Island that is now under construction.
