A grassroots Ohio initiative to eliminate property taxes acknowledged it lacked the necessary signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot.

10tv.com reports the Committee to Abolish Ohio’s Property Taxes, known as AxOhioTax, needed at least 413,000 valid signatures to qualify for this November’s statewide ballot. The initiative’s organizers planned to secure about 620,000 signatures to withstand challenges of that some signatures would be ruled invalid.

To date, the group amassed 305,000 signatures. Brian Massey, who formed AxOhioTax, said his group will continue collecting signatures and refocus their efforts for a place on the November 2027 ballot.

“As responsible citizens, we will give legislators another year to see if they will come up with solutions to the problem,” Massey said. “We’ve got to shrink the size of the government.”

While the initiative had little support among elected officials, Republican State Rep. David Thomas admitted their effort helped to prioritize the issue in Ohio. Thomas helped write five property tax relief bills signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine that went into effect in March.

“Without them, we would not have been able to do what we’ve done already in this General Assembly,” Thomas said.
