When the Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer Adele belted out the lyric “Hello from the other side,” she wasn’t referring to communications with ghosts. However, a comment that she made insinuating that an English mansion where she briefly lived was haunted is reportedly preventing it from being sold.

The Times reports Adele’s commented in a talk show interview that Lock House in Partridge Green, West Sussex, was “quite scary” during her residency for six months in 2012.

Fast-forward to today and the property’s owner, Nicholas Sutton, has complained that his efforts to sell the estate at the listed $7.4 million price have been thwarted because Adele’s comments had a damaging effect on its reputation. Sutton acquired the Edwardian-era estate in 2003 and invested in a “significant refurbishment” that included the addition of a swimming pool.

“Unfortunately, during an interview on CBS, Adele remarked that she believed the house to be haunted,” Sutton complained. “This comment negatively impacted future marketing efforts and continues to affect the property’s reputation to this day.”

Sutton added that he “actively tried to sell the property for about 14 years” and sought the help of prominent real estate agents, but to no avail.

“The only offer received over the years was in August 2020, but the prospective buyer withdrew after learning about the property’s supposed haunted status, which was publicly mentioned by Adele during her tenancy,” he said. “The first tenant, Adele, stayed for six months and blighted the property saying it is haunted.”

Last year, Sutton sought planning permission to convert the mansion into a multifamily complex with five apartments, but his application was rejected.
