Fewer Canadians are venturing south in search of American residential properties, according to a new data report from Redfin.
The number of Canadian Redfin.com users searching for homes in the US on Redfin.com was down 26.4% year-over-year in May. The decline took an abrupt drop in February when the White House implemented 25% tariffs on imports from Canada, and by April the decline went further to a 34.2% year-over-year plummet when the Trump administration rolled out its global tariff policy.
Redfin’s data is based on unique Canadian users – specifically, the number of different people who access US home listings on Redfin.com or the Redfin app within a defined period; that user is counted only once for the period. Historically, Canadians have made up the largest portion of international homebuyers in the US, with 13% of foreign buyers coming from Canada.
Heather Mahmood-Corley, a Redfin Premier agent in Phoenix, stated, “Normally I work with about five Canadian buyers each spring, mostly older folks looking for a second home. This year, there were none. I actually helped a Canadian sell their Phoenix home earlier this year. People from Canada are retreating from owning real estate in the US because of political tensions; some of them are worried it will no longer be practical to travel back and forth between the two countries, and some don’t want their money tied up in the US. But also, we’re not seeing as many snowbird buyers in general; I’ve noticed older people are more concerned about their stock portfolios and 401Ks as the economy fluctuates.”

Canadian residents believe they have a right to tell us what they think about our Country and how it is run. I was in the D.R., and an older man and his wife were on the same tram at our resort, and he insisted he tell me what he thought about Trump. His wife told him to stop, and I added, “It’s okay, he can say whatever he wants. You know why? Because Americans don’t give a #^%$ what you think. You don’t live there.” Take yourself home to your incredibly weird and liberal home. We don’t care what you think.
YES!!! And so they aren’t buying homes in the US? Who cares? Don’t we have a shortage of homes? Now Americans can buy them.
Couldn’t agree more Fed Up, we winter in Lake Havasu City and have a neighbor who is so anti Trump🤦🏻♀️. We don’t talk politics with them at all, not worth our time!
I just have to say that I’m old enough to be increadibly disappointed with the fact that tensions are so high between individuals regarding politics. I’m not a Trumpster. I don’t like the way he acts personally, politically or in the business world. even so, I recognize that he was rightfully elected to the Presidency. Whether he makes it a full term or not, remains to be seen. All that being said, as Americans (or Canadians & Europeans, for that matter), we all have a right to our opinions and to be able to express those opinions…IN A CIVIL MANNER. We are all human and we should be able to agree to disagree respectfully. Thank you
Canadians did NOT pick a fight with the U.S.
It is TRUMP and the TRUMP MAGA cult that insists on punching first, rather than quietly
sitting down and having a trade conversation.
When Trump started his knee jerk, flip flopping trade war,
Trump also claimed that “AN IDIOT” had negotiated the prior trade deal with Canada, and it was the dumbest trade deal ever (in the history of the world, I’m sure).
Fact is, it was TRUMP, himself, who had renegotiated the prior trade deal with Canada during his first term….,
and, yes, Trump is stupid, or can’t remember his own first term, is just deflecting blame from himself, yet again.
MAGA supporters are emotionally damaged people who must have winners and losers, with them being labeled superior, and all others as inferior. It is classic authoritarian personality traits. They must crush others (for no reason) just to feel better about themselves.
Canada does not need the U.S., though Canada and the U.S. benefit from a fair trade deal, which existed before Trump’s spastic TACO Tariff syndrome.
Canada should move to trade more with other nations and be as self-reliant as that country can be. Our nation is unreliable and dangerous under MAGA Trumpers.
But our nation has always had divisions, with bigots, right wing evangelicals, and brutal capitalists joining together throughout our history to try to harm other citizens, treat people like crap, disrupt needed governmental functions, pollute the world, destroy what little is left of wild nature, and even gut key agencies that work hard and do achieve major breakthroughs in all fields of science and technology, including medicine, and those achievements are used by private companies to profit well and get those products out to the public. MAGAs shoot themselves in the foot and don’t even realize it, or, worse, don’t care. Just pathetic.
NAFTA – not long ago, liberals were against this trade act. Trump stands up for the common man, trying to bring back economic prosperity for more Americans, the tariffs hurt in the short run, better for the long term however. The real problem is our massive deficit, we have to creatively get ourselves out of this mess, the deficit is causing our inflation. There are new monetary units against the dollar, BRICS, cripto. And I am a former dem, old hippy.
Canadians are notorious cheapskates. Always looking for the steal of the deal and spoiled by being used to their money going much further in the US. They will not buy here so long as housing prices and interest rates remain high and that’s fine by me.
