Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has launched a legal defense fund as the Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly investigating his finances.
Last month, President Trump accused Schiff of mortgage fraud while the lawmaker was a member of the House of Representatives. Trump noted that Schiff listed a property in Maryland as his primary residence in 2009 so he could achieve more favorable mortgage financing terms. In a Truth Social post, Trump said Schiff continued to cite this property as his primary residence “through multiple transactions until the Maryland property was correctly designated as a second home on October 13, 2020.”
Ed Martin, a former Interim US Attorney in Washington, DC, is reportedly leading the DOJ probe into Schiff’s mortgage transactions. Martin, who has a special prosecutor title, is also investigating mortgage fraud allegations against another Trump foe, New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Schiff has been a leading adversary against Trump for years, leading the first impeachment effort in the House against Trump and later serving on the congressional investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. President Joe Biden issued a pre-emptive pardon for Schiff before leaving office in connection to his work with the Jan. 6 committee.
“It’s clear that Donald Trump and his MAGA allies will continue weaponizing the justice process to attack Senator Schiff for holding this corrupt administration accountable,” said Marisol Samayoa, in a statement. “This fund will ensure he can fight back against these baseless smears while continuing to do his job.”
