The Wyoming legislature is considering a bill that would provide a property tax exemption to Gold Star families.

WyomingNews.com reports that Senate File 102 would extend the existing veterans’ $6,000 property tax exemption to the parents of a veteran who died while serving in the military, provided there is no surviving spouse. A Gold Star family is one that lost a family member who died during military service. Traditionally, the property tax exemption was only extended to a surviving spouse.

Sen. Bill Landen (R-Casper), the bill’s main sponsor, estimated there were 39 Gold Star families in Wyoming. He stated the bill was inspired by a discussion with one of the families.

“I went away from that conversation thinking that we ought to allow for providing that to his parents if he does not have a spouse,” Landen said.
