A historic church property in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, is now up for sale after more than a century at its location.

St. Pete Rising reports the congregation of 102-year-old Trinity Lutheran Church voted to approve the property’s sale. The congregation merged in 2025 with Hope Lutheran Church, and the combined services and ministries will be based at Hope’s campus.

Trinity is located on a 0.45-acre property that includes a 10,000-square-foot Gothic Revival sanctuary, a 14,442-square-foot education building, and 13 on-site parking spaces. The church owns a second parking lot across the street.

Last year, the congregation secured local historic landmark designation for the sanctuary, which protects the structure from demolition and will require municipal review for any exterior alterations.

In its peak years, the church hosted three Sunday services and welcomed thousands of congregants. The decision to sell the property comes as attendance declined at Trinity while its maintenance needs grew more burdensome. To cover operating costs, the congregation sold parking lots and tapped into investment income.

“The building is 100 years old. The congregation is 115,” said Pastor Paul Gibson. “Churches are about the people and about the impact they make on the community. This decision is not about leaving behind our past, but about faithfully embracing our future. By bringing our congregation together in one location, we can focus our time, resources, and energy where they matter most – on strengthening our ministry, serving our neighbors, and continuing to share God’s love for many years to come.”

The church has not publicized a listing price, although Gibson added the proceeds of a sale will be reinvested into Trinity’s ministry.

“I really am very optimistic about the future,” he said. “I’m hoping the congregation will get excited about that as well.”
