Tuesday night’s debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris virtually ignored barely mentioned housing issues, with Harris making fleeting references to the subject while Trump did not address the issue and the ABC News moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis failed to bring it up.

During her presentations, Harris made two very brief comments on housing. At the start of the debate, Harris’s opening statement included the observation: “We know that we have a shortage of homes and housing, and the cost of housing is too expensive for far too many people.” Later in the debate, she interjected: “I have a plan that is about allowing people to be able to pursue what has been fleeting in terms of the American dream by offering help with down payment of $25,000, down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers.”

The absence of housing from the debate topics seemed to ignore the economic problems created by the housing market. In June, a survey found more than nine in 10 (91%) adult Gen Zers declaring that housing affordability is their top issue in this year’s presidential election. In March, another survey found more than half (53.2%) of homeowners and renters declaring that housing affordability will impact who they plan to vote for in the upcoming presidential election while nearly two-thirds (64.2%) of homeowners and renters said housing affordability makes them feel negative about the economy.

Home prices and mortgage rates soared while affordable homeownership opportunities dwindled during the Biden-Harris administration, a point that Harris did not acknowledge, Trump did not point out and the ABC debate moderators did not raise.
