Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) has pushed back at President Donald Trump’s statement that the lawmaker engaged in mortgage fraud by claiming the allegations were raised to divert attention from the growing controversy regarding the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.

“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason,” said Schiff on his X page. “So in a way, I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot.”

Schiff added, “This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies. So it is not a surprise, only how weak this false allegation turns out to be. And much as Trump may hope, this smear will not distract from his Epstein files problem.”

Trump declared on Truth Social that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division determined the California senator “has engaged in a sustained pattern” of potential mortgage fraud when he cited a Maryland property as his primary residence while he was serving in the House of Representatives. The president added that Schiff was a “scam artist” who “needs to be brought to justice.”

While there was no mention of a Schiff investigation on the Fannie Mae website, Trump’s assertion was affirmed by Bill Pulte, who is both Fannie Mae’s chairman and director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency

“President Trump’s Truth Post this morning is accurate as Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division concluded that Mr. Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud,” said Pulte on his personal X page. However, Pulte did not echo Trump’s demand for Schiff’s prosecution.
