Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has blasted Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte for his excessive social media criticism of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

Warren, the Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, sent a letter to Pulte questioning whether this incessant social media posts about Powell is distracting him from his FHFA leadership responsibilities. Warren observed that Pulte either posted or reposted more than 100 messages on X about Powell since the beginning of July, with 15 posts on July 16 alone.

“Your job is to manage FHFA, oversee our nation’s mortgage market, and lower costs for American families–full stop,” Warren wrote. “Your prolific activity on X and apparent decision to take time away from your duties as FHFA Director to draft a letter for President Trump to fire Chair Powell are abnormal. Your behavior raises significant questions about your judgement and commitment to operating FHFA in a responsible, competent, and lawful manner.”

Warren added, “During your nomination process, I raised concerns about your excessive and unusual use of social media, and how that reflected on your temperament and fitness to serve. It now appears that my concerns were prescient.” She also noted that Pulte failed to comply with her request for copies of 25,000 X posts that he deleted ahead of his confirmation.

Pulte responded to Warren’s letter on X, claiming, “It is quite rich to see Elizabeth Warren defending Jerome Powell” while sharing a January 2024 video of Warren criticizing Powell’s job performance. He also shared a cartoon of Powell luxuriating in a pool outside of the Fed’s headquarters with Warren standing by the pool dressed in American Indian clothing.
