Spending on data center construction totaled $22.3 billion in June, the second-highest monthly total on record. According to a new data report from ConstructConnect, June’s total was second only to the January record high of $25.5 billion.
Year-to-date spending on data center construction through June reached $81.5 billion. This was greater than the full-year 2025 total of $72.5 billion and more than three times the 2024 full-year total.
During June, ground was broken on 23 new data center projects, which increased the year-to-date start count to 116. ConstructConnect Chief Economist Michael Guckes observed, “These projects are also getting larger, as the average data center has more than doubled in size since 2022, reaching nearly 700,000 square feet in the second quarter of 2026. That growth may reflect firms seeking economies of scale to reduce their cost per unit of compute.”
However, data center project starts were mostly limited to a handful of states. On a year-to-date measurement, North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan each recorded more than $10 billion in new starts. Construction activity has been concentrated in the South and Midwest, while Guckes pointed out that “near-term planned spending is geographically consistent with the broader shift toward regions with available power and water resources. Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, Arkansas, and Utah lead the pipeline. Southern states, including Georgia and Oklahoma, and Midwest states, including Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, account for much of the remaining activity.”
