Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has raised the idea of calling a special legislative session that would focus on cutting property taxes.

WLRN.org reports that legislators are currently weighing ideas on relieving the state’s property tax burden, which would be voted on during the 2026 legislative session prior to next year’s election. However, DeSantis is now floating the idea of a special legislative session if lawmakers fail to come up a property tax relief strategy.

“We could potentially have a special session on property tax right in the middle of the Republican primary season in July or August,” said DeSantis. “Imagine that. I don’t think a lot of these guys would want to vote the wrong way then.”

Holding a special session does not guarantee that any legislation would pass. Nonetheless, DeSantis – who is prevented from seeking re-election in 2026 due to term limits – insists legislators find a solution that will benefit homeowners without disrupting government operations once property tax revenue shrinks.
