A Florida legislator is proposing a new bill that would offer certain homeowners an annual $1,000 rebate on their properties over the next five years.
Newsweek reports Rep. Jeff Holcomb’s House Bill 71 would enable some homestead property owners to receive a total of $5,000 in property tax rebates between 2026 and 2030. To be eligible for these rebates, homeowners must receive a homestead exemption on properties valued between $100,000 and $450,000.
The rebates would be administered by the Florida Department of Financial Services, with the state’s chief financial officer coordinating with property appraisers to ensure homeowner eligibility. Holcomb, a Republican, said approximately 3.5 million Florida homeowners could be eligible.
If Holcomb’s bill passed, the rebates would begin next summer. Gov. Ron DeSantis had also proposed a similar rebate program, with the goal of having it begin this year, and he also raised the idea of eliminating property taxes entirely. Holcomb stated that “the elimination of property tax is still an option. This bill does not hinder that.”
