A historic home in Maine is now up for sale for $1.00, but (of course) there is a catch. The new owner can only move into the house after they move it.
WMTW reports the Deering House in Bath, Maine, was built around 1900 and was originally the residence of the shipbuilder Gardiner G. Deering. General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, which now owns the property, is selling the 4,216-square-foot Deering House for a single dollar, along with a smaller adjacent structure, but the buyer has to absorb all of the costs of relocating the properties.
The relocation needs to occur by Nov. 20, 2027. If the house cannot be moved by that time, it will be demolished to make way for a new Bath Iron Works facility.
“It’s important for General Dynamics and Bath Iron Works to continue to be able to grow as a company and employ thousands of Mainers. We’re looking for ways to improve our facilities,” said Jolene Nickerson, director of facilities capital at Bath Iron Works. “The hope is that there is somebody that has a viable lot to move this to, and that it’s financially feasible for somebody who is interested in the house to relocate it and preserve the historic nature, which the community is very excited about.”
