The town of Orange, Connecticut, has enacted a ban on short-term Airbnb-type rentals lasting less than 30 days in residential areas.
WFSB reports the Planning and Zoning Committee amended its zoning regulations following complaints from neighbors about loud and wild parties occurring at a residence being rented out on Airbnb. The neighbors organized an online petition drive that claimed the Airbnb renters created excessive traffic and disruptive noise, with loud and drunken guests roaming about and trash cans overflowing with garbage.
“We constantly hear music playing from inside the house that I can clearly hear across in our bedrooms,” said one neighbor in an emailed complaint, adding, “I’ve heard parties go on well past 10pm during weekdays and even louder ones on the weekends.”
The residence in question is no longer listed on Airbnb. The town’s prohibition takes effect on Dec. 9 and does not cover rentals lasting more than 30 days.
“If a homeowner wants to enter into a long-term leasing arrangement, that is allowed,” said Kevin Cornell, a member of the Orange Planning and Zoning Commission.
