Oklahoma’s Gov. Kevin Stitt used his final State of the State address to call for a statewide property tax freeze.
News9.com reports the term-limited Republican governor argued that a growing number of state residents are unable to obtain homeownership due to elevated home values.
“Too many Oklahomans, veterans, seniors, young families, they are feeling the pressure,” he said, “Many are concerned they are being priced out of the American dream.”
Stitt observed the increase in property values and property taxes was the result of Oklahoma being a “Top 10 state.”
“More businesses, more people, more demand for housing, which means higher property taxes,” he continued, adding that voters should decide on the issue of a freeze on property taxes as a ballot referendum in the November election. “I’m calling for a State Question that freezes property tax growth across the board. Send it to the people.”
Stitt offered no details on how long his proposed freeze would stay in place or how the state would replace the revenue lost by a property tax freeze.
