Missouri lawmakers are considering a resolution that would eliminate property taxes for veterans who are 100% disabled.
KMOV reports the Missouri House passed House Joint Resolution 115, which would create a ballot referendum that would let voters decide in November whether to go forward with the property tax break. It is estimated that 21,000 Missouri veterans would benefit from the proposal, which applies only to a disabled veteran’s primary home and not to other taxable assets.
Currently, only disabled veterans who were prisoners of war qualify for property tax exemption in Missouri. At least 20 states provide a full property tax break to disabled veterans, including the eight states bordering Missouri.
“Missouri kind of lags behind some of our surrounding states,” said Bruce Becker, commander of VFW Post 8828 in Troy, Missouri.
The bill is currently waiting on a Senate hearing before it can be voted on by the full Senate.
