Summary

Mortgage banking revenue rose at M&T Bank during the third quarter.

M&T Bank reported third-quarter net income of $775 million on October 16, while mortgage banking revenue rose 19% from the previous quarter to $152 million. The bank attributed the increase largely to residential mortgage subservicing income, following the addition of $62.9 billion in loans to its subservicing platform in June.

Average commercial real estate loans increased $1.6 billion from the second quarter, contributing to a $2.6 billion increase in average loans overall. The bank’s nonaccrual loans rose to $1.30 billion at September 30 from $1.21 billion three months earlier, although they remained 14% below the level a year ago.

Those figures, disclosed in M&T’s earnings release, show a lender growing selected real estate exposures while credit quality remains uneven. Nonaccrual balances and loan originations are different measures and should not be confused.
